Monday Nights in Charlotte

For those who don't know, there is a great contra dancing group up in Charlotte that meets every Monday night. Check out the website here. For those who don't know what contra dancing is...well, it isn't exactly the easiest thing to explain. Some say it's like an amusement park ride that you make for yourself. Others would say it's seeing how many different ways and times you can spin. It has some English Country dance elements in it - like heys, rights and lefts, and courtesy turns - but it is a bit more rambunctious. I say you just need to come join us and find out for yourself!

  1. I always thought it was spelled HAYS… I guess neither seems to make much sense, but I thought the "a" made a little more sense. ; )

  2. I looked it up to double check, and
apparently it can be spelled either
hey, hay or heye. With the term being
used since before the 1650s, there is
variants of the spelling over the years.
It appears to have come from a French
term, la heye, which was a type of fence
with sticks interwoven with each other.
So I can see how it could've come
from that word. ;-) Hey seems to be
the most common, which is why it is
usually the spelling I use. ECD has
    some pretty interesting names for
    moves!

Hannah, I didn't know that you've done contra!
